Objectives and Activities

Founded in 1272 and Incorporated by Royal Charter in 1439, the Cordwainers Company has an active membership of 120 Liverymen today.

The Company's Objectives and Activities are:

  • the corporate management of the Company’s property and investments.
  • the management of the Company’s charitable funds and trusts and the administration of donations to some 40 designated charities and 120 individuals in the City of London and elsewhere.
  • to promote the footwear and other leather industries and to give active support to education and training in the associated design and production skills.
  • to foster comradeship amongst members of the Company by holding meetings and events
  • to support the Lord Mayor and the Corporation of the City of London.

Governance:

The Powers of the Company are vested in the Master and Wardens and they are responsible for:

  • the oversight of the affairs and activities of the Company.
  • the effective and efficient use of the Company’s resources.
  • safeguarding the assets of the Company.

The Clerk to the Company whose role is equivalent to that of Chief Executive of a limited liability company is responsible for the routine direction, organisation and management of the affairs and activities of the company and the conduct of their duties of the staff of the Company.

Membership:

Membership of the Company is limited by number and eligibility is defined in detail in the Ordinances of the Company. Interested individuals from the footwear industry are advised to seek guidance from the Clerk to the Company on the procedures for applications for admission to the Livery.
